Reading- Book Review on 101 Organic Gardening Tips

101 Organic Gardening Tips
101 Organic Gardening Tips [Kindle Edition]

I download this book a few months ago for free on amazon.com (follow me on Facebook at PaGardens to see the garden books, I find free). I just finished reading it today. This book is worth the $10 and I would have bought it for that price! I bought it on Kindle. My book is full of highlighted useful information, for me to reference back to though out the garden year.

The book is written very well and is help full for every type of gardener. It is descriptive for new gardener, and filled with so much information that something can help the oldest gardener.

I love how there are 101 tips and they are explain in at least 2 paragraphs. Each tip is number and explain very well.

I want to thank Mrs. Richerson for all her helpful insides to garden.

Gardening~ 2 Weeks After Average Frost - Weekly Goals

According to my book Week-by-Week Vegetable Gardener’s Handbook, even though we are 2 weeks before last frost. I did get frost, last week. I would rather wait to put out any of my melons, peppers, and tomatoes, until we have a week of full 50* weather. Therefore when the book says to put it out you will see a side not that I'm not. If you have had temperature 50* or plus for a week straight, I think you should be fine.

Weekly Garden Goals
1. Pepper, tomato and eggplant start plants- set out to harden off, you do this a little at a time over a week. Mulch around the plant after you plant them in the ground. (I'm going to push this back, some of my started seed haven't even come up. I think it is to cold outside to plant them)
2. Cucumber, squash, and melons - tart plants- set out to harden off, you do this a little at a time over a week. Mulch around the plant after you plant them in the ground. (I'm going to push this back)
3. Strawberry- mulch around strawberry plant so that the fruit stays off the ground. I was excited this week to see my strawberries have started to bloom.
4. All crops- keep an eye out for slugs. Yuck I found one trying to eat my potato plants. I feed him to my chicks. They were so happy.
5. Potato- when the plant start to show though the garden you want to cover them back up little a hill
6. Leaf lettuce, carrots, beets, sweet corn and radish- I be honest I am behind all the planting, I still don't have my corn and carrots planted. I can't even find my carrot seed. :( I will have to pick up more at the store. I hoping to get caught up this week.
7. Bush- type summer squash - seed for container planting (I think they are talking zucchini and yellow squash). This is a great idea to do if I get extra start plants, I was wondering what I was going to do with them.
8. New Zealand Spinach- directly sow into garden bed. I'm behind on this too. :( I am hoping to get it done this week.
9. Rhubarb- keep harvesting ( I have to get mine planted for next year, I'm thinking 2 bushes.
10. Mustard green- harvest leaves
11. Garlic- cut scraps and use to cook with. I never thought of cooking with the greens of garlic. It makes so much sense. I am going to cut half and leave the other half to make bulbs to plant in the fall. (Woohoo free seeds!)

What are you planting this week? Are you worried about surprise frost?

Gardening - Planting The Left Side of The Garden Fence

Today is 4/23 I am planning my left side of my garden. I already have 3 blueberry plants planted from last year.

List of seeds I want to plant

How do I plan my garden? Well I'm super spoiled by my hubby, whenever I say I want a seed. It comes. (He loves it because they are only a few dollars. I love the surprise they make me feel special. ) I have all the seeds in two boxes.

First thing I do is make a list of the seeds I have and where I want to plant them. That took 2 days!

My Row f Beans and I want to plant Kale in between

Then I look up companion plants to the plants I'm planting. In this side of garden I'm planting beans. I research companion plant to beans and found a long list on about.com http://organicgardening.about.com/od/vegetablesherbs/p/beancompanions.htm and pick kale to plant with my beans. This works out great because I want sure where I was going to plant the kale! I am so happy. Then I lay out the seeds. So I can see what I'm planting.

The pink are Pink Lemonade blueberries and blue are my blueberry bushes then I want to plant Rasberry Lemnade Zinna in between

After that I lay out the outside of the left side of the fence. This is a little easier because I have berries planted on the fence. I have 3 regular blueberry bushes and I bought 2 pink lemonade blueberry bushes to plant. In between the bushes I'm plant on planting Raspberry lemonade zinnia plants. I am planting them for 2 reasons. One is they are awesome cutting flowers and I saved the seeds so they should grow awesome this year. The second reason is to bring helpful bugs into the garden.

All my seeds together

Then I look at them together. I get so excited. I plan on planting this weekend, I bagged them up so they are ready for me to plant this weekend!

How do you get ready to plant you garden?

Gardening Tips ~ Pest Control

The worst part of gardening is going in the garden and it being destroyed by something! Bugs are one of the most damaging things that can get into your garden and destroy it overnight.

Steps I take to avoid a pest problem

1.      Walk the garden daily – this lets you know what is going on in the garden. I try to do this every morning, before I leave for work. I wall around and see what is growing and how it is doing.

2.      Weed your garden- now I have many garden boxes, weed sometime becomes a lot of work so I try to do it daily (one box each day). By weeding I see what is in the box and I scare away bugs.

3.      Research – on my Facebook- Pa Gardeners page I am always adding information I find on the internet. I share it with you guys so you can know more about what you are planting. If you know the bugs that will g after the plant you are planting you will be able to know them while you are weeding and find them easier.

Gardening-Information on Pear trees and how I planted mine

My 3 year pear tree flowering for the first time

I am so excited! This is the 1st year my Pear tree has bloomed! Hubby and I planted the tree 2 falls ago. Last year the tree had leaves and grow but no flowers. According to Better Home and Garden pear trees are great for 1st time gardeners. They are easy to grow and don't need anything special.

My new Pear tree

I decide this year, that we would get another pear tree to cross with the first tree. I grabbed on at tracker supply and then saw on at Walmart for $10. Hubby said we could get both!

My 3 Pear trees planted in the ground

On Sunday (April 14) we decide to plant our trees. It took about 10 minutes to plant them. First we dug the hole 2 inch deeper than the pot it came in. After that we added some organic compost. Next we broke up the root ball and put it in the hole. After that we cover the root ball with fresh dirt. Then cover it up making a hump with the old dirt. After that we ran the hose for 10 minutes to water it.

According to Ezine Articles that pears came from Switzerland. This fruit can be grown from seeds, but it is a poor germination. Most trees are grafted into trees.

Gardening- tips on how to care for a pear tree

Different types of pears

Pear tree are suppose to be great to grow for 1st Gardeners, because they don't even special treatments.
Tips
1. Plant in an area that get at least 6 hours of light.
2. Plant in well drained area
3. Prune in spring before the tree starts to show growth.
4. When the pears start to grow you want to reduce the number of pears next to each other so they will grow bigger.

Good luck with your pear trees!
